The competent teacher has foundational knowledge of reading, writing, and oral communication within the content area and recognizes and addresses student reading, writing, and oral communication needs to facilitate the acquisition of content knowledge.
This presentation was made for a class, I chose the topic of Adapting instruction in reading and writing. I explain different teaching strategies with reading and writing. I focus on strategies that "develop word knowledge, vocabulary, comprehension, fluency, and strategy use in the content areas" (6I). This is important because there are different strategies that can work for different teachers and settings. A strategy for working in a whole class may be different than strategies for a one-on-one. I learned that there are adaptations for literacy, and it is important to use these adaptations for students who are at a lower reading level. I have adapted many literacy/comprehension questions to fit the students' individual reading levels. This makes it easier for them to share their thoughts and participate.
This is a reading and comprehension activity that I created. The activity asks students "to analyze, evaluate, synthesize, and summarize information in single texts" (6O). The students complete the work independently with a few verbal prompts if they need help. The students read the passage and answer the questions. I assessed them on comprehension and prediction. This is important because students need these skills to become better readers and use in their academic journey. I learned that although I had adapted some of the questions, the students still seemed to struggle with the comprehension. I thought I had modified the activity, but it was still confusing for them. I learned that I have to chose a passage that fits students' individual levels and write questions that also fit their reading level. It was a great activity, but I realize that I could have differentiated better.
