The competent teacher differentiates instruction by using a variety of strategies that support critical and creative thinking, problem-solving, and continuous growth and learning. This teacher understands that the classroom is a dynamic environment requiring ongoing modification of instruction to enhance learning for each student.
I taught foundations to a small group at kindergarten revel level. I created stations for the students to rotate and work in each station. The stations included alphabetical order, rhyming words and short vowel CVC words. Instructions for the short vowel station was confusing for the students, so I modified "instruction based on outcome data, as well as student needs, goals, and response" (5H). Instead of giving the students all of the short vowel cards, I gave them words with either shor "o" or short 'a' first. Breaking the station into parts made it much easier! This is important because I had to change my instructions to help the students succeed. I learned that sometimes lessons have to be changed last minute to best support students and that's ok. The important thing is that the students learn and take away something from the lesson.
I wanted my students to practice writing, so I made this presentation for the students to add a slide and share what they write. This was a fun writing prompt where the students were given a season as the topic and write on how their season is different than the other four seasons. This was a fun assignment because I got to be the "instructor, facilitator, coach, or audience " for the students (5K). After the students finished, I instructed them to share their slide with the class, which was fun to see! This is important because students should get the opportunity to talk in front of the class and build their writing skills. I learned that students will be engaged with a lesson that they have an interest in. The students had a fun time creating the slides and adding images. It is important to find what the students are interested in, then I can apply their interests into my lessons!
