The competent teacher understands the diverse characteristics and abilities of each student and how individuals develop and learn within the context of their social, economic, cultural, linguistic, and academic experiences. The teacher uses these experiences to create instructional opportunities that maximize student learning.
This Lesson Plan was made in Dec. of 2022 for the class, "Elementary Literacy". This lesson plan is made for a Project-Based Unit on Community. Students will learn more about the diversity at their school and research a culture that they are not familiar with. The students will learn the "social, economic, cultural, linguistic, and academic experiences" of thier peers (1C). Students are provided the materials, such as a book on cultures as well as journals for taking notes. The final product is a book made by the students including the research, informal writing and pictures they made, representing the diversity of the school community.
This article is important because this is when I first learned how to write a Project-Based Unit, combining reading and writing standards with Social Emotional standards towards a learning objective on community. This lesson is great for student learning because it creates "meaningful learning opportunities and enrich instruction for all students" (1L).
I have learned many new and interesting strategies to engage students in learning about the cultures within the classroom and the school. This has helped my development as a teacher because it has allowed me to explore these strategies and understand how much I can learn from my students! The students will be learning about different cultures, and they will share what they like about their culture. This is important to me because I want to learn from my students and make a connection with them! I will make sure to celebrate cultures in my future classroom and learn from my students!
This paper was written in October of 2022 for the class, "Diverse and Learner ready teaching". In my paper, I talk about my placement at the time and how I noticed diversity at the school. This paper helped me to think and write about what I had experienced and observed at the school.
This article is important because I took what I observed and shared what I had learned about community and inclusion in the classroom. From working on this article, I understand "the spectrum of student diversity" and I uncover "the assets that each student brings to learning across the curriculum" (1A). I also understand how to support a diverse class with technology by "identify individual needs" and discovering "technology, services, and resources to address those needs" (1G).
I have learned that a school is a community of people who looks out for the students and their families. I learned that support could look different for each student, such as a modified activities or materials, students should be given the support that they need! Diversity is so important in the classroom, and I want to encourage, support and include every student in my classroom! What I have learned has helped me to grow as a teacher, as someone who loves every student and creates a safe and welcoming classroom enviornment!
