Breakout.Edu Activity: Introducing the Open Housing Marches in Milwaukee

Students can use the model of an "Escape Room" to break into a lockbox by finding clues from materials that teach about the Marches for Fair Housing in Milwaukee in the 1960s.

Using Time Capsules to Understand the Past, Evaluate the Present, and Envision the Future

In this lesson, students are encouraged to think about the power of time capsules.  They think about what might have been in a time capsule remembering the March on Milwaukee 50 years ago, brainstorm what they might put into a time capsule to remember their own experiences today, and then imagine a time capsule that they would create in 50 years, after they had created positive change, as “a way to practice the future in our minds, alone and together” (Walidah Iarisha).  The lesson is presented through a Google Slides presentation.

Design a Monument Project

After learning about the Marches for Fair Housing in Milwaukee, students commemorate the actions of the NAACP Youth Council Members and Commandos and reignite visions of change and activism by designing a monument for Milwaukee.
