What is a Program of Work (POW)?
A Program of Work is the chapter’s organized plan for the year that outlines what members will do, why they will do it, and how activities connect to FCCLA’s mission. It serves as a roadmap that guides meetings, projects, and events.
How does our POW reflect FCCLA purposes?
National FCCLA calls their organizations to fulfill the following purposes:
To provide opportunities for personal development and preparation for adult life.
To strengthen the function of the family as a basic unit of society.
To encourage democracy through cooperative action in the home and community.
To encourage individual and group involvement in helping achieve global cooperation and harmony.
To promote greater understanding between youth and adults.
To provide opportunities for making decisions and for assuming responsibilities.
To prepare for the multiple roles of men and women in today's society.
To promote Family and Consumer Sciences and related occupations.
Our Program of Work reflects the purposes of FCCLA in every page and every line. We provide opportunities for personal development and preparation for adult life all throughout the year, with events like attending the Say Yes to FCS day at NDSU in May and the North Dakota FCCLA State Leadership Conference. Through these events, students can explore what kind of leader they want to develop into, all while keeping FCCLA close at heart.
Often times, members at the Mandan High FCCLA report that the chapter feels like family. The democratic way we run our meetings gives everyone an equal chance to have their voice heard on chapter matters. This voting style promotes healthy and even relationships, which in turn strengthens the family relations of our members outside of FCCLA.
As is reflected across our POW, Mandan High FCCLA strives to show cooperation and grace, through both conflict and peace. Each and every member is encouraged to be more active in their communities and to cooperate with others. This cooperation in the community is often with adults, which is what a lot of students need to work on. Through activities like our sponsorship meeting and fundraisers, students have to work with adults towards a shared goal. This effort greatly improves community relations and students' leadership skills.
Mandan High FCCLA at its core is a Family and Career Sciences organization, and that is shown through community service events, competitive events, and informational all-member meetings.
FCS Promotion in our POW: FCS stands for Family & Consumer Sciences, and the Mandan High Chapter strives to keep family and consumer values at its core as demonstrated by our program of work. The very way we operate as a chapter promotes family values, connects directly to the FCS classroom, and promotes personal development as we operate with strong personal bonds and always in a friendly manner.
Throughout the year's event offerings, and especially at the District, State, and National Conferences, members are taught various FCS skills and even demonstrate their learned proficiency through competitive events. FCCLA Members conduct regular presentations to build FCS awareness in classroom and the community beyond.
To join FCCLA, members are required to have been in a minimum of one semester of a FCS class. The Mandan High FCCLA chapter promotes the learning of FCS skills and promotes the practicing and development of these skills. Often they are developed through studying for competitive events, presentations at conferences, and sharing knowledge with fellow members.
Skill Development in our POW: While being a participating member of the Mandan High FCCLA chapter, students develop various FCCLA-related skills. These skills include leadership, forming family and community connections, and helping communities. Mandan High FCCLA holds regular events to develop FCS skills such as crafting parties, leadership development, and activities at regular meetings as seen in the program of work. In addition, these skills are highly exercised and developed through competitive events and other opportunities that take place at conferences and chapter meetings/activities. Overall, Mandan High FCCLA strives to build a program of work to help FCCLA members become choice ready for their FCS future.
