STAR stands for Students Taking Action with Recognition. Members can choose from a vast selection of both National and State events to impact their personal growth and communities. Each one requires students to find a family, career, or community-related issue, which is then addressed through their project using the FCCLA planning process (identify concerns, set a goal, form a plan, act, and follow up).
These events run at the district, state, and national level. Students demonstrate and develop achievements and proficiency in projects, leadership skills, and preparation for future career paths in individual or team events.
Students at Mandan High compete at the District, State, and National levels in every event. You can stay updated with the dates of these competitions by viewing the Mandan FCCLA Calendar.

Through Skill Demonstration events, students showcase the college and career readiness skills they have gained in their FACS classes or FCCLA experiences. These events may be more brief than STAR Events projects because they focus on fine tuning essential FACS Skills.
At Mandan High FCCLA, we compete in these events at the state and national levels. There is no process to qualify for the state or national level as there is in STAR events competition, but participants simply sign up and prepare.
National FCCLA chooses a set list of Skill Demonstration Events to be held at each National Leadership Conference. Click to see the 2025-2026 Skill Demonstration Events.
The FCCLA Challenge Tests give students a chance to compete and practice their college and career readiness skills they've learned in FCS classes or FCCLA experiences.
Students can compete online in the fall or at the National Leadership Convention in the summer.
