I am including my BreakoutEDU Game Design assignment as my signature assignment for this course.
Assignment Objective: Demonstrate the understanding of the educational applications of games and gamification principles through the creation of a grade level appropriate game.
I love BreakoutEDU for developing collaboration, communication, creativity, and critical thinking. Before this assignment, I ran one BreakoutEDU game from their website. My students LOVED it. They were all engaged and worked together to solve puzzles and riddles. I immediately saw the benefits. This assignment was the perfect opportunity for me to challenge myself and design my own Breakout game. I am happy with how it turned out, and I can't wait to run it with my class in a couple of weeks when we finish our Gold Rush unit. Once I execute the game with class and with my grade-level partner's class, I will make any necessary tweaks and submit the game for publishing consideration in the BreakoutEDU library.
This process has given me the confidence to develop more games. I already have some ideas for a Summer Stealer game to play on the last day of school. Students will have to work together to get a key to get out of school & begin summer vacation. I'm hoping my principal will let me lock the front gate to the school & use the actual key! I also saw an idea to use a Breakout game at the beginning of the school year as a way for students to get to know their teacher. This would be an excellent opportunity to build a community. It also provides the opportunity for the teacher to gain some insight on their students' personalities. Which students are able to stay on task, who demonstrates perseverance, and who can listen to others? This will be a summer project for sure.
