Overall Reflection
The Leading Edge Certification class has been an excellent way to help me more clearly understand Online, Blended, and Flipped Learning. I was of the mindset that flipped learning had to happen between home and school which caused me to hesitate with implementing it. Since my students are only 9 and 10 years old, I try to limit the amount of homework I ask them to complete outside of school hours. I am realizing now that the blended learning can happen within the classroom. It is an instructional model that I can use to allow my students to work at their pace through our content. If I have students working online, I will be available to work with small groups and provide explicit instruction at the time it is needed. I am trying to start small and focus on implementing these methods in my Math class. Once I set up the procedures and get my students used to working independently and being help accountable for their learning, it will be easier to implement blended learning in other content areas. At the CUE Conference, I learned more about the tools: Pear Deck, Nearpod, and Wizer.me which I think will be helpful in implementing blended learning. I will be able to use these tools to deliver instruction and content to my students.
CUE Community
The Google+ CUE Community continues to be a great place to share and network. The most valuable CUE Community experience this week however was not online, it was attending the CUE National conference in Palm Spring.
I attended CUE with a team from my district, but I was able to break away and meet some fellow IEC peeps. Lisa organized a meet up on the Thursday evening during the conference, so I was able to meet, lead learners, Ed & Nancy as well as fellow cohort members, Jan & Diane. It was great to meet these folks in person since we have been working so closely together online.
I was also able to attend my CUE Affiliate Meet up (East Bay) and meet the affiliate leaders and other teachers in my area.
I bogged about my CUE Conference experience HERE
On Google+, our cohort was able to coordinate the Web 2.0 Tools project that we were assigned. Jaymien created a slide presentation for all of us to collaborate on. Some of us were also sharing what we were learning at the conference in Google+. This is great because there were so many amazing sessions being offered, but it is not possible to be at all of them.
Project Status
I am continuing to add content top my blog, Above the Line in Elementary. I have blogs planned for the upcoming assignments I have in the works involving Google Maps. My blog was a great way for me to reflect on my CUE 2017 National Conference experience. I have also added some posts on using Google Chrome Extensions, 360 images with Google Street View, and Tour Builder.
Elective Status
1 down - 2 to go! I finally completed my first elective - EDUC-914: Effective Strategies - Using Technology to Differentiate for Student Success.
I felt a huge sense of relief when I submitted this class and checked it off my list. I wish I could say that all the work was worth while, but I feel our IEC synchronous courses have been much more beneficial. The content in this course was very out dated, and not all the links worked, so that caused some frustration. The good thing is that id forced me to spend time studying HyperDocs and I created on to use with my students as my final assignment.
I am now registered for TEC-982, The Flipped Classroom, which should fit in with what I am working to implement in my Math class. Based on positive recommendation from my fellow cohort members, I think my third elective will be Twitter for Education.
