I am excited to implement flipped learning with my students. It is important for them to realize that they need to take responsibility for their own learning, and this instructional model really puts the responsibility on them. In addition to achieving fourth-grade math standards, they will be learning discipline and study skills as well.
My this lesson is laying the foundation for student to use multiplication (or division) to find equivalent fractions. The lesson uses area models so that student can visually see what is happening. This will help them understand when we start multiplying the numerator and denominator by the same number to find equivalent fractions.
Since our first attempt at creating instructional videos in Module 3, I have continued creating screencast for my Fractions module. My intent is to release on video per day through edPuzzle as homework to prepare students for the next day's lesson. I'm not sure how I will handle Mondays because I typically do not assign homework over the weekend in fourth-grade. Monday will most likely be a traditional teaching day.
Videos will also stored in a YouTube channel where students can access them at anytime.
Students will be divided into practice groups based on their edPuzzle quiz results. My hope is that by watching students who have demonstrated mastery of the skill participate in more interesting projects or choice activities will help my less motivated students work to their fullest potential and challenge themselves to become self-directed learners. It will also provide me with the time I need to really work one-on-one or in small groups with the students who really do struggle. I would also like to develop leadership skill in some of my more advanced students and allow them to become peer tutors.
