Flipped Learning
Traditionally, education is seen from a "sage on the stage" point of view, where a teacher lectures at students and then asks that they complete a task to demonstrate their understanding. This isn't the only way that you can be present in your classroom!
Flipped learning is all about creating an environment where you can diversify your learning to individualize learning for your students. Flipped learning allows students to learn at their own pace and have you, the teacher, all the time! Watch the video to the right to get a great introduction to a flipped classroom, including how to start flipping your lessons and creating a classroom community with this method.
Four Pillars of F.L.I.P Learning
Flexible Environment
Flipped Learning is heavily reliant on creating an environment that is able to adapt to the students' needs, providing different ways for students to develop understanding and demonstrate mastery. In order for this environment to work properly, the teacher must also be observing their classroom and assessing the type of learning that students would best benefit from.
Learning Culture
Your lessons should put learning in the center, not lecturing. Students should be allowed to engage with the material as they need, and scaffolding and differentiation should be used to make this learning accessible to all students.
Intentional Content
Keeping content intentional and at the forefront of planning allows you to consider how your students have access to the content you wish to convey. This could mean creating your own videos and products for students to utilize as they need, differentiating your content for accessibility,
Professional Educator
In the context of flipped learning, a professional educator is someone who makes themselves available for all of their students, constantly provides formative assessments through observation, and is willing to collaborate with other educators to help others and keep up to date in their practices.
