Exodus 3:13-14
God is Who He Is
13 Moses said to God, "Suppose I go to the Israelites and say to them, 'The God of your fathers has sent me to you,' and they ask me, 'What is his name?' Then what shall I tell them?" 14 God said to Moses, "I AM WHO I AM. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: 'I AM has sent me to you.'"
Matthew 12:38
The Pharisees Want a Personal Miracle
38 Then some of the Pharisees and teachers of the law said to him, "Teacher, we want to see a sign from you."
Isaiah 55:8-13
God's Thoughts and Ways are Not My Thoughts and Ways
8 "For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways," declares the LORD. 9 "As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts. 10 As the rain and the snow come down from heaven, and do not return to it without watering the earth and making it bud and flourish, so that it yields seed for the sower and bread for the eater, 11 so is my word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it. 12 You will go out in joy and be led forth in peace; the mountains and hills will burst into song before you, and all the trees of the field will clap their hands. 13 Instead of the thornbush will grow the juniper, and instead of briers the myrtle will grow. This will be for the LORD's renown, for an everlasting sign, that will endure forever."
Luke 13:31-35
31 At that time some Pharisees came to Jesus and said to him, “Leave this place and go somewhere else. Herod wants to kill you.”
32 He replied, “Go tell that fox, ‘I will keep on driving out demons and healing people today and tomorrow, and on the third day I will reach my goal.’ 33 In any case, I must press on today and tomorrow and the next day—for surely no prophet can die outside Jerusalem!
34 “Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you were not willing. 35 Look, your house is left to you desolate. I tell you, you will not see me again until you say, ‘Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.’”
Jesus said, "Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you were not willing...Look, your house is left to you desolate...I tell you, you will not see Me again until you say, ‘Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord."...
I have seen when I was younger, a hen gather her chicks under her wings...It amazed me when I was young how she might think her soft feathery wings could protect her young chicklings...And the sight of baby chicks under her mother's wings is a beautiful and wonderful sight -but most of all a loving sight...So when I read these verses I think very much of a personal God...I often think of God as being personal...And I do believe that...I believe He LOVES everyone and wants to have a relationship with them...
But God being personal is one thing...Me thinking that He personally ought to be like what I want Him to be is another...The atheist Richard Dawkins sadly said, “The God of the Old Testament is arguably the most unpleasant character in all fiction: jealous and proud of it; a petty, unjust, unforgiving control-freak; a vindictive, bloodthirsty ethnic cleanser; a misogynistic, homophobic, racist, infanticidal, genocidal, filicidal, pestilential, megalomaniacal, sadomasochistic, capriciously malevolent bully.” ...This is very sadly how Richard Dawkins sees our Father in Heaven...My God and Dawkin's God might raise three questions, "Why shouldn't God be like the God I believe in and how I see Him in my mind?"...And two "why doesn't God come out and give us more evidence of His nature?"...
These are personal questions wanting personal answers from a personal God...God seems to come to us in glimpses and slices...He does not give us constant information...This seems to be more His nature...I want to see and hear more of Him on a personal note...I would love to see a personal miracle...The third question on how I want God to be is "Why shouldn't God be like I want Him to be?"...God does not think like I think, and His ways are not the same as my ways (nor, when I really think about it, do I really want Him to be)...God's nature and ways are just that -God's Own Personal Nature and Ways...God's name is I AM...God is Who He Is...He is not what I always believe and want Him to be...He Is Who He Is...He is not the way others want Him to be...His Name is I AM WHO I AM...And that is the way it needs to be and should be...
