Multicultural education is incredibly important, but how can it be implemented effectively? Over a month, I conducted a survey on multicultural education in Chinese immersion classrooms. Through analysis of this survey and related research, I identified three possible solutions, then created this presentation. It has been an interesting and meaningful research journey!
My wicked problem is: How to integrate multicultural education into Chinese immersion classrooms, and foster an awareness of cultural diversity among all students? My presentation is divided into four parts: Introduction, Research, Survey, and Solutions. The Introduction section discusses the reasons for selecting this problem: Most Chinese teachers come from Mainland China or Taiwan, where we did receive very less multicultural education growing up in a monoethnic nation. Upon coming to the United States, many Chinese teachers experience cultural shock due to lacking this knowledge and experience. However, this is a positive thing; it forces us to think about multicultural perspective and impart this influence to our students.
The research section includes definitions and purposes of multicultural education, as well as two videos that provides an excellent explanation of eight aspects of multicultural education, and how we can support openness knowledge, and adaptability in our classrooms.
The survey section introduces the statistical results and three patterns: Chinese teachers have relative confidence in their multicultural knowledge and try to apply it in the classroom. Influenced by teachers, students also enjoy exploring multiculturalism and using Chinese. Both teacher efforts and parental support are important. This is my first time designing a survey, and I've learned how to ask questions effectively and analyze data to identify patterns and potential solutions.
The final section is the solutions—strengthening teacher training, starting multicultural education from kindergarten, and enriching the diversity of textbook content.
I really enjoyed this exploration journey! I hope both ourselves and our students can gradually grow into true global citizens.
