I have been working at a Chinese immersion school for four years. I have noticed that some teachers are very experienced in classroom management and lesson preparation, but they tend to stick to old methods and find it difficult to innovate in their teaching. This is also true for some experienced teachers who rely on "inertia"- teaching the way they always have. Through my learning this week, I have come to understand the concept of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and how it can be connected with innovation. It made me to think about: how can I use UDL to make my class rich and fun, and how can I help students enjoy learning Chinese and use the language to create their own works?
UDL provides more flexibility and reduces learning barriers to meet the needs of all students. It divides learning into three parts - representation, action and expression, and engagement. Representation refers to the diversity of ways information is presented. Action and expression allow students to present their learning outcomes using different methods. Engagement involves using different activities to increase student interest and participation. These three aspects play a crucial role in promoting innovation in teaching and learning for teachers and students. For teachers, the diversity of information presentation can increase classroom interest. Visual learners can learn through pictures, videos, and charts, while auditory learners can learn through note-taking and reading. This requires teachers to design different classroom activities to achieve the goals. As students learn in different ways, they will present their learning outcomes in different ways, such as recording a video, creating an information board, or making a presentation. This high level of classroom participation will inspire teachers to innovate in classroom activities, which will in turn encourage students to innovate in their learning outcomes.
