Our principal once told us, "The classroom environment is your best advertisement as a teacher." The classroom should display what the children have been learning recently, their work, things they like, and self-expressive content. Such a classroom is open, inclusive, and loved by the children.
The items shown in the following photos are all handmade by me. For example, this wall displays the morning meeting content, including today's learning center groups, date, and schedule. Each morning, a student stands in front of the class to lead everyone in saying these items in Chinese. On the right side are social studies posters and student work.
These are posters from the science and social studies classes. At that time, the students were learning about the eight planets and "Me on the Map." The students enjoyed coming here during breaks or free time to play as "little teacher" and explain to other students, which was very cute!
This wall is dedicated to math content, where students are learning vertical calculations and word problems. When they forget how to solve a problem, they can come here to find the steps themselves, making it a great self-study and self-check resource.
This wall is in the back corner of the classroom and features Chinese color words (trust me, every Chinese teacher should have a Chinese color wall because students will ask you countless times how to write the color characters!). It also includes a birthday chart for the students. During breaks, the children like to check who has a birthday this month.
This is a Chinese character wall, displaying all the characters learned in the first grade. As children learn and forget, it's very necessary to have all the characters posted. When students can't remember how to write a character while composing sentences, I simply tell them to find it on the character wall. (You can't imagine how many children struggle with writing sentences and how many characters they can't remember, even though they have learned them before! The phrase "please go find it yourself" and the character wall have really helped me a lot.)
I like a neatly arranged classroom, with each student having their own desk, all facing the smartboard at the front. This arrangement helps the children focus during lessons. When group work is needed, I let them push their desks together to form groups, which is also a great opportunity for teamwork!
Student work is mostly displayed on the hallway walls, so children can see it when they go out to play or use the restroom, as classroom space is limited. I am very pleased with my classroom. Do you like it?
