Have you ever thought about many jobs today that didn’t even exist 20 years ago? Such as social media strategist, user experience specialist, telework manager? (What is 21st century education? 2012) What jobs are we going to have in 20 years? We may not able to imagine today. Before cultivating 21st century learners, we must become 21st century educators.
In this video, 21st century education is about creativity, cultural awareness, problem solving, innovation, civic engagement, communication, productivity, collaboration, accountability, exploration, initiative, responsibility, and leadership. I am interested in creativity, cultural awareness, and exploration. As a Chinese immersion teacher, I hope students can apply what they have learned to create their own works. For example, when students understand “represent”, they can design an "animal country flag". Cultural awareness is essential, too. Students learn Chinese and China through their teachers everyday.
I also faced challenges in preparing this video. When it comes to what characteristics I should develop with my students, it’s really hard for me to pick one or two. All of them should be strengthened! I chose exploration because it drives students’ learning. Experienced teachers may have some ignorance on fixed topics. People’s passion on exploration decreases as they grow up. Then my question is, how to stay curious about familiar things?
