During the last few weeks, Pathways students have been attending workshops at Venture Arts to learn about photography. They have been using iPads and cameras to take photos both in the studio and around the community, then manipulating them in Photoshop. The result has been the creation of beautifully abstract mirror images, made entirely by the students with their newfound skills.
The first activity that students took part in blotting ink onto a sheet of paper and blowing it with a straw. After they had made their patterns, they folded the paper in half, creating a mirror image. This was a fun, messy and creative introduction to the practice of mirroring images that the students continued and expanded on.
Students were introduced to Viewmasters, and old way of viewing 35mm film in a way that combines two near-identical photos to make them appear textured and 3 dimensional. To use them, you have to look through the eyeholes and point the device towards a source of light. Tayab was absolutely fascinated by them!
The students went on to take photos with a camera on a tripod. They photographed eachother, posing behind a studio curtain, and taking turns to get to grips with the basics of digital photography. They took a range of photos, some with individuals face on and side on, and some with small groups of students together.
They then imported these photos onto ipads and learned how to duplicate and rotate them on photoshop, in order to create digital mirror images. They also learned how to alter these images in other ways, like drawing and adding text, editing the colours and changing the contrast settings.
