Pathways students from group 3 have been going to gardening workshops at Hulme Garden Centre.
This has been a fantastic opportunity for the students, providing them with expert knowledge on how to grow their own herbs, and encouraging them to engage with one of the many great institutions on offer to them in the College's area.
In the first session, the students were given a tour of the Centre and told what different plants were, such as a rosemary plant, a bay tree, and a mint plant. They were then brewed a fresh mint tea to demonstrate how herbs can be enjoyed at home, and it was delicious!
They were then each given a different herb plant each and a bigger pot to fill with earth and put to plant in. They were given a secondary pot and some coriander seeds to plant as well. The plants are growing healthily in the department!
During their second session at Hulme Garden Centre, students worked with Kath to plant a variety of vegetables and accompanying plants.
Students had the choice of planting either a squash/pumpkin and peppers or tomatoes and sweetcorn. They then went on to plant numerous onion bulbs for spring onions. They mixed compost and fertiliser, filled pots and certainly got their hands dirty! The session was thoroughly enjoyed by all!
In the third session, some photographers from Manchester Metropolitan University came to help with the mornings workshop, incorporating photographic practices into the activities the students undertook.
First, they cut some mint and dug up some mint roots, planting their own small plants and taking them back to college.
They were then each given vintage cameras with 35mm film loaded into them, and told to explore the garden centre and take pictures of plants they liked.
After they had explored and taken a break for a fresh mint tea, they rummaged for some pretty plants and flowers, collecting them to put onto a special photographic paper.
