For my Capstone, I worked with the C Lab lead by Dr. Carlo da Cunha and two other Electrical Engineering students to design a scanning tunneling microscope(STM) at a fraction of the price of the average industrial STM.  The team was capable of producing a design for an STM and constructed a prototype for under $1,000, but was unable to produce images using the STM due to large amounts of electrical noise that would obscure the tunneling signal. to the right is a picture of the most recent iteration of the prototype.
