Cosmaele was born in Genoa, and was one of the lucky children of a rich merchant who was sent to school. He learned at a Church school, and later from a private tutor, before he acquired a job working for a rich nobleman who was collecting rare books. Cosmaele's skills as a scribe expanded into upkeeping and repairing the older books that his master found. In fact, his master was an associate of a strange group of mystic scholars.

Unfortunately, one such book Cosmaele came across Cosmaele's desk for repair, a book with dark portents and vile secrets. Cosmaele found the subject interesting as he repaired it, but otherwise thought nothing of it. When interested individuals from the Church arrived to speak to Cosmaele's master about suspicious books, he put all the blame for any strange books on Cosmaele's head. The scholar's attempts to find honest innocence failed miserably, and he was forced to flee his home.

Vespera's master, always on the lookout for skilled individuals who have nowhere else to go, found Cosmaele and immediately put him to work in the library, repairing books and helping the bookbinders - it became his calling and obsession to rebind decaying books, reinscribe failing illuminations, and preserve the mystic knowledge he found.
