London is the capital of The United Kingdom (U.K). It is an important business and cultural city and it is also an economic and cultural centre. The city stands on the River Thames in the south-east of England. London's skyline reflects both the city's colourful past and its modern, architectural soul. It was a small Celtic village when the Romans arrived in 43 A.D. and renamed it Londinium. Nowadays, London is one of the most important cities in the world. In London there is a diverse range of people and cultures: people speak more than 300 languages and there's a population of over 8.5 million people. Its landmarks include the Tower of London; The Palace of Westminster, Westminster Abbey, Buckingham Palace, The London Eye, Tower Bridge, Trafalgar Square, Piccadilly Circus and The Shard. London has several museums, galleries, libraries and sporting events. The most important are: the British Museum, The National Gallery, Natural History Museum, Tate Modern, Madame Tussaud's waxwork collection, The O2 Arena. The Tube (as Londoners call it) is the oldest underground railway network in the world.
