RJs are effective conversations between teacher and student. They allow the teacher to demonstrate empathy, teach children how to resolve conflict and give the child a voice. At Linguajoy, we believe these conversations send a strong message of care to the student, reiterate your high expectations and create a plan that sets you both up for success.
Before you start:
1.One-to-one set up; no distractions
2.Physically on same level – eye contact
3.Keep it calm, empathic and positive
The conversation:
1.Hear student voice: “Why do you think you’re here?”, “You seem distracted, is everything ok?”
2.How their behaviour impacts learning: “When you talk while I’m talking, it tells me that you’re not listening and therefore you won’t know what to do next”
3.Reiterate expectation: “When I give an instruction, I expect you to be listening; eyes on me, ears listening and no talking”
4.Agree on an action plan together: “What can we do about this moving forward? That sounds like a good idea. Looking forward to seeing it in action.”
5.Catch them doing it right! "Great job"
We understand that language barriers between student and teacher can often prevent effective conversations from happening. Therefore, keeping sentences very simple, using hand gestures and making exaggerated facial expressions are very important. The conversation could go a little something like this...
1.Hear student voice: “Are you okay?”
2.How their behaviour impacts learning: “Not good today”
3.Reiterate expectation: “When I speak, you not speak, Understand?”
4. Agree on an action plan together: “Good lesson now! Ready?”
5. Catch them doing it right! "Great"
Top tip! Have a physical gesture at the end of your conversation to signify both you and the student are on the same team e.g. handshake, fist bump, high five. This keeps things positive!
