Effective communication between parent and teacher greatly supports the child's learning and creates a strong feeling of community.
Before...
-Ideally, catch the parent/carer when they come to collect their child. If this is not possible, please contact Tania to come up with an action plan.
- Contract a time for the conversation.
- Keep conversation calm, positive and actionable. Focus on the mutual care for their child’s learning experience.
“Hi, this is Max from Linguajoy, Stella’s English teacher. Do you have 5 minutes to have a quick conversation?”
During… (SLATE)
State: “Unfortunately, Stella did not have a good lesson today. Even after being reminded of the 'one voice listened to' expectation, she continued to talk while others were talking. Her behaviour was distracting the others in the class."
*it's important here that you separate behaviour from the child: "her behaviour was distracting", rather than "Stella was distracting"*
Listen: “What are your thoughts on this? “
*This question is very important in understanding the context. The child could be sleeping badly, or having a difficult time at home. The more data you have, the more likely you can find solutions together*
Acknowledge: “So just to clarify, Stella is finding English lessons too easy and is getting bored. I totally understand”
*Clarifying what they have said will show you're listening. Empathising and acknowledging will also show your mutual care for the child and their learning*
Think of solutions: “I spoke to Stella today. I wonder whether you could have a conversation with her at home so we can have a better lesson next week?” / ”what do you think will work best to get her back on track?”
*The best solutions are those that satisfy both parent and teacher. Phrase suggestions, rather than demands*
End: “Thank you so much for your time. I will let you know how next lesson goes.”
*Thanking the parent ensures the conversation ends on a positive note* Remembering that Linguajoy language courses are a fun, freetime hobby for the children, who are our VIP customers. The children will need to want to be there with us every week, as Linguajoy is not a primary school. We have to be very sensitive and constructive with potential feedback we give to parents, not to scare or embarrass parents into canceling the course.
After…
- Catch up with the parent after next lesson. It is as important to let the parent know when it’s going well too!
Top Tip! Positive phone calls are just as important. If a child is doing well, make some time to let the parent know. It will be the highlight of their week!
