Beautyberry Jelly

American beautyberry (Callicarpa americana) is a native plant to Florida.  Their foliage is a favorite of white-tailed deer and their seeds and berries are a dietary component of many birds, especially northern bobwhite quail.  The berries are also edible to humans, and can make a uniquely flavored and colorful jelly or jam.  Collect them in the fall for a fun project and treat! But don't forget to leave some berries for the birds.

Our iNaturalist Project

This iNaturalist Project is where we record observations we find during hikes. We also record species found locally that are relevant to the contest we participate in.  Email me to get access to add observations to the project.

Pine Cone Bird Feeders

In the autumn and winter, use peanut butter and bird seed to cover pine cones for a quick and fun project that's also enjoyable for birds.

These slides provide tips for the project and safety tips for feeding birds as well.
