Google My Maps in the Classroom

Collaborate, Create Content, and Develop Research & Writing Skills

Level: Beginner, Intermediate

Audience: Upper-Elementary, Secondary, Post-Secondary

You don’t have to be a Geography teacher to take advantage of Google’s geo tools to get your students researching, synthesizing, and creating content while collaborating! This session will introduce you to Google’s My Maps and give you an opportunity to set-up your own map. How can this be use in your classroom? Create maps for a variety of purposes: a travelogue, an historical map, a map of world heritage sites, or a tour of local cultural sites. Once your students complete the research process, have them embed photos, videos and links to each pin on the map, and when your map is ready embed it on your Google Site or other web site, or simply share the link with your wider community! The end of this session will introduce very briefly other Google geo tools such as Google Street View, Tour Builder and the Google Cultural Institute.
