Your doctor has asked you to complete a 24-hour urine test. This test measures what your kidneys are filtering and helps us better understand your health.
Please read these instructions carefully before starting your collection.
The large urine collection jug provided by the lab.
A clean container (to urinate into, then pour into the jug, if easier).
A refrigerator or cooler with ice (to keep the jug cold).
Day 1 – Morning Start
When you wake up, go to the bathroom and flush the first urine. Do not collect this.
Write down the time — this is your start time.
During the Day
Collect all urine you pass for the next 24 hours.
Each time you urinate, pour it into the jug.
Keep the jug in the fridge or cooler with ice.
Day 2 – Morning End
At the same time as yesterday’s start, collect your first morning urine and add it to the jug.
This is your final sample.
Do not miss any urine. If you forget even one, you’ll need to restart.
Keep the container tightly closed and stored cold.
Do not pour out or spill any urine.
Return the jug to the lab as soon as you finish.
Follow any diet or medication instructions your doctor gave you.
