LFSC was founded around the Lightning class. The Lightning is a 1938 design by Sparkman & Stephens. It is 19 feet long, weighs about 700 pounds, and is usually sailed with a crew of three (or sometimes two for club racing).
It’s a great boat for learning teamwork and sail control, since each crew member has an important role. Many sailors say that if you learn to sail a Lightning, you can sail almost any boat. Even some America’s Cup sailors have raced Lightnings.
Founding member Herman Nickels won the Lightning North American Championship in 1959. That same year, Herman and David Nickels also won a bronze medal at the Pan American Games and the Winter Championship. Over the years, LFSC members have won many regattas and championships in the Lightning class.
Mark your calendars for the 5th Annual Open Regatta, May 16-17, 2026. Check the "Regattas" tab for more information.
