Life in Cohousing, a Dream We Will Make Reality
Our Philosophy
At Lagungarri, we rely on five key principles to build a vibrant, sustainable, and people-centered community.
Lagungarri is not just a collection of homes; it will be the result of the collective effort of its founding members. From the beginning, members actively participate in the project’s design, contributing ideas and decisions to create a space that reflects everyone’s needs and values.
Each member enjoys their private apartment, designed for comfort and independence. At the same time, Lagungarri offers extensive shared spaces that foster community life:
Common House: Featuring a dining room, meeting room, play areas, and guest spaces.
Shared Outdoor Areas: Gardens, workshops, spaces for gatherings and celebrations, and more.
This model allows private homes to be more compact, as common spaces expand opportunities for living and enjoyment.
Lagungarri is designed to include an ideal number of homes to create a dynamic, close-knit community, typically ranging from 40 to 60 residences. This size promotes informal interactions among residents and strengthens relationships.
Happiness does not come from square meters, happiness comes from who you share them with.
Additionally, the architectural design enhances community life:
Cars are kept out of the complex’s main areas, leaving the heart of the space free for collective enjoyment.
The common house is strategically located to encourage casual contact, meetings, and joint activities.
Lagungarri will be governed by its residents, who will manage key aspects such as maintenance, finances, and activity organization.
Decision-Making: We use a participatory, non-hierarchical consensus model where everyone has a voice.
Community Contribution: Residents are encouraged to participate actively, whether by tending the gardens, supporting one another, organizing events, or helping manage the community.
This approach fosters a sense of belonging and strengthens bonds among members.
Lagungarri will not be isolated; it seeks to integrate into its environment and be a space open to society.
Diversity: We welcome people with different experiences and backgrounds, as long as they share our values and commitment to community life.
Open Activities: We will organize events and activities in the shared spaces to connect with the local community, promoting enriching exchanges between Lagungarri and its surroundings.
A Community Built on Shared Values
Lagungarri is more than a place to live; it is a community built on mutual respect, collaboration, and a commitment to collective well-being. We strive to create an environment where decisions are based on reliable information and the common interest of all members.
To ensure harmony and shared purpose, we seek individuals who embrace these values and are willing to build an active, respectful, and open community guided by ethical principles.
At Lagungarri, we are a nonprofit association committed to promoting personal autonomy and addressing dependency through collaborative housing. We are registered in the Basque Country with CIF G01586627 and registration number AS/A/23079/2020.
Our purpose is to develop a community living model inspired by senior cohousing as an alternative to traditional residential models. We aim to combat loneliness, preserve privacy, and provide an environment that allows us to take control of our lives while sharing experiences and mutual support.
We aspire to build a nonprofit housing cooperative under a use-rights model, located in Murgia (Álava), where we can address critical questions about aging:
• Where will we live when we are no longer as independent?
• Who will care for us if we become dependent?
At Lagungarri, we dream of homes designed to combine private and communal spaces, promoting intimacy, togetherness, and enriching relationships. Our approach does not rely solely on family or public administrations but envisions a future based on freedom, utility, and harmony.
