October 22nd. Alexandra Godoy successfully defended her master's thesis. Her work focused on studying the functional role of the CB1 receptor in PV+ cells. She was under the direct supervision of María Ceprian. Congratulations!!
Cathaysa presented part of her PhD thesis in the Euskampus day in Irun. Her project (in co-tutelle with Giovanni Marsicano in Bordeaux) examines the role of astrocytes in the medial habenula in the pathophysiology of emotion. Edgar (LTC CannaMetHD) had the opportunity to discuss scientific collaboration with Cristina Miguelez's group (LTC CoMorPD)
On October 7th we attended Neuroscience Day 2026 at the UPV/EHU Science Park in Leioa, this year under the motto “It’s a NeuroMatch!”. The event brings together the neuroscience groups of the campus and is organised by the Faculty of Medicine and Nursing and Achucarro. During the poster session, Lucía presented the lines of the lab, and discovering what other teams nearby are doing. Afterwards, our lab member Cathaysa Rodríguez joined Andrea Filiu, Luzia López and Aitor Ordeñana in a talk about their experience as young researchers starting a scientific career. Science, coffee and new connections: looking forward to the next edition!
This September we celebrated our 3rd lab retreat in Luaiondo, Araba. During those days each member of the team present their project, discussing new experiments and potential collaborations. This time the Dr. Joaquin Piriz was our guest. We had plenty of fun, playing table tennis and games. Looking forward for the 4th edition.
We are delighted to share that our colleague Sandra Beriain is currently in Paris, completing a scientific research stay at one of the most prestigious institutions in Europe: the Collège de France.
During her time in the French capital, Sandra has joined the team of Dr. Nathalie Rouach at the Center for Interdisciplinary Research in Biology (CIRB).
Dr. Rouach's laboratory is an international benchmark in the field of neurobiology, specifically in the study of Neuroglial Interactions in Cerebral Physiology and Pathologies. Their research focuses on exploring a fascinating area: how astrocytes (and glial cells in general) are not mere "bystanders" in the brain, but play a direct role in information processing, synaptic transmission, and neuronal plasticity.
This experience in Paris will allow Sandra to work at the forefront of research on the role these interactions play in cognitive processes such as memory, and their involvement in conditions such as epilepsy or intellectual disability.
From here, we wish Sandra great success in this new adventure. We hope you fully enjoy the scientific experience (as well as the Parisian life), and we look forward to having you back so you can tell us everything you have learned!
We are proud to share that our laboratory was very well represented at the latest edition of Neurogune, the premier gathering for the neuroscience research community in our region.
On this occasion, we had a very active participation thanks to our colleagues Alejandra Godoy, Cathaysa Rodríguez Cedrés, Malen Albeniz, and Pablo Reyes-Velasquez, who were in charge of presenting the latest advances in their respective research projects.
During the event, our researchers had the opportunity to present their work, discuss their results with other experts, and draw inspiration from the ideas and feedback of the scientific community. Events like Neurogune are essential not only to give visibility to the science we do in the lab but also to create synergies and strengthen collaborations with other research groups.
Congratulations to Alejandra, Cathaysa, Malen, and Pablo for the excellent work presented and for representing our group's science so well! We keep moving forward.
We are thrilled to announce that our scientific family keeps growing. We have recently welcomed three new members who are joining the group to continue their training, bring new perspectives, and collaborate on our research projects.
Let us introduce our newest additions:
Monika Bielska: Joins us as a Neuroscience PhD student from the University of Glasgow (through the ECTP program). Monika will be working with the team to advance her predoctoral research.
Julene Gómez: A Biomedical Sciences undergraduate student from the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB). Julene has joined the lab to carry out her bachelor's internship, where she will be able to apply her knowledge and gain hands-on experience in our daily lab work.
Paula Múgica: A Biology undergraduate student from the University of Navarra (UNAV), who also joins us to complete her training internship and delve into the world of experimental research.
We are delighted to have you with us and that you have chosen our laboratory for this stage of your scientific careers. We wish you great success, lots of learning, and hope you fully enjoy the experience of working with the team!
The Laboratory of Cells and Behavior is driven by a vision of continuous scientific innovation. As our understanding of the brain evolves, so too do our research efforts, ensuring that we uncover the intricate cell-type specific mechanisms that dictate cognitive and emotional processes. Whether you are a fellow neuroscientist, a clinician, a prospective student, or an industry partner, our work is designed to foster a deeper physiological understanding of the brain and inspire the next generation of neurodegenerative therapies.
We welcome scientific collaboration and knowledge sharing. If you're interested in our research, want to explore academic or institutional partnership opportunities, or have specialized insights to contribute, don't hesitate to reach out. Let’s work together to shape the future of cellular and behavioral neuroscience.
