Our laboratory investigates the cellular and circuit mechanisms underlying cognitive and emotional behaviors in both males and females. We focus on cell-type-specific pathways involved in brain function and disease, using CB1 receptor signaling as a key framework for studying complex brain processes. Through molecular, cellular, and behavioral approaches, our research aims to advance the understanding of memory, emotion, and neurodegenerative and neuropsychiatric disorders.

At the Cells and Behavior Laboratory, our mission is to fundamentally revolutionize our understanding of how the brain governs cognitive and emotional processes. We believe that unraveling the sheer complexity of the brain, in both males and females, requires diving deep into the intricate circuits and cell-type-specific mechanisms that dictate our behavior in both health and disease.
We are driven by the urgent need to address complex neurological challenges. By investigating the pathophysiology of the endocannabinoid system, specifically the CB1 receptor, we strive to decode the foundations of memory. Our ultimate goal is to translate these fundamental genetic and behavioral discoveries into innovative therapeutic approaches to treat neurodegenerative diseases.
Furthermore, we are dedicated to redefining how emotional states are studied. Emotions are the result of an orchestrated body activity, and we focus on the medial habenula (MHb) as a critical interface between aversive signals, emotional regulation, and peripheral modulators. By mapping the undiscovered functional links between specific MHb cell types and emotional pathophysiology, we aim to unlock new frameworks for understanding and treating emotional disorders.
Our goal is to revolutionise the understanding of cognitive and emotional brain circuits, making our laboratory a benchmark in behavioral neuroscience. We invite you to use our findings and methodological resources to inform your own research.
