Title: The labyrinth of knowledge and the guiding thread
Statement: The only "monster" one can encounter in the labyrinth of knowledge is the misleading belief that learning is done in a linear way, or in the same way. From this point of view, one can welcome and enjoy the various adventures, all the possible paths during this endless journey. The key words, taken from Edgar Morin's Teaching to Live, are used to describe some of the principles of the guiding thread of my role as a teacher.
Title : The Francophonie of the World from Home
Statement: I put francophone music because I think it is important to study through the arts and I like to teach music. I put books because I think literature and grammar and reading is very important. I put "welcome" because I think it's important to create a space where students feel comfortable and want to come to school. I put a set of teachers that teach different subjects because I think it's very important to have a team that you can rely on and ask questions of each other. I put food because I think French culture goes very well with learning about cooking and different cultures and how to prepare meals. I also put the symbol of the Francophonie.
Title: An adventure and exploration of the world
Statement: I created this collage with my old National Geographic magazines. I like to think of learning a language other than your own as an adventure or exploration. Learning a language is a key! It opens up possibilities.
Titre: Learning about the world
Statement: Language learning is: travel, writing, moving, art, music, connection people and culture. No one recipe, no linear way of growing. Just the world and what we make of it.
Title: My identity as a francophone and as a FSL teacher
Statement: Because my materials were a bit limited, I decided to not only do this collage by hand but to do it so that my identity and my identity as a teacher were all represented in black and white with pops of colour. I think that this portrays my own personality quite accurately: on the surface there are quite straightforward qualities, but the more it gets uncovered the more pops of colour appear. These pictures not only portray my own visions for my future classrooms, but they portray what I see the French language as.
Title: Apprendre ensemble
Statement: I chose these images to represent me as a future FSL teacher because I think they encapsulate my goals and my vision. I emphasized culture--diversity, Francophonie, travel--as an important element of my vision. The second most important aspect of my collage is my emphasis on causes that I think are critical as a teacher--social justice, inclusion, mental health, for example. Finally, I also included images like books, writing, food, and music to represent the different elements that I would like to include in my future classroom.
Title : Growth
Statement : Unification and Diversification. Always developing.
Title: The ideal teacher is one whom students would consider to be the ideal teacher.
Statement: The ideal teacher cares about the well-being of his/her students. To best meet their needs, they engage in a lifelong learning journey.
Title: From Coast to Coast
Statement: I love to travel and the languages I speak help me pursue this passion. As for the French language, it brought me to Ottawa, Canada. Maybe being a French teacher will take me elsewhere?
Title: Teacher and Student in Search
Statement: In my collage we have an image of a teacher who strives to understand his student's needs by providing them with an opportunity to express themselves (speech). He looks after their mental health (the heart) although he sometimes has areas that are incomprehensible due to unexplainable elements (inverted writing). He wants to give his students a smile and make them love languages and French (represented by the child who is holding a diary). To do this, he does research, but does not forget to take care of himself.
Statement: As an FSL teacher, I believe that learning a new modern language is fun. In my classroom, students should feel relaxed and have the freedom to be themselves. They should have many choices to express themselves. Learning a new language is like opening a door to a New World that others who don't know the language can't open. It is a very rewarding experience and students need to understand the value and joy of learning a new language.
Statement: For my collage, I collected images that were more cultural than academic. Certainly, it is not a complete idea, but I see myself in the role of FSL teacher in part as a library for my students. I provide a structure (represented by the shelf and clock) that is filled with my experiences and knowledge. So the shelf is continually in a cycle of filling and offering.
Title: Holistic education
Curatorial Statement: As a teacher, I hope to create an environment that welcomes and supports all students, meaning an environment in which all students can see their identities reflected meaningfully and respectfully in school materials and in the school culture. I hope to inspire a love of languages through acceptance, creativity, caring, and a positive attitude. I hope to model resilience, care, communication, and a global and eco-conscious perspective. I take pride in the work of all students and take any opportunity to display their work.
Title: Compassion, Happiness and Kindness
Statement: It is important to me that every child is treated fairly and that every child knows that they matter. I believe that creating an inclusive, safe, and happy environment can promote learning.
Title: Awareness, Have Confidence
Statement: "I want to help the student find his or her francité" - Lise Paiement
Title: Inspire, Encourage, Create
Statement: This collage highlights the importance of creativity and allowing all students to express themselves. It also shows how important it is for teachers to continually motivate their students and demonstrate what it means to be a lifelong learner.
