Standard 7 - Assessment – The competent teacher understands and uses appropriate formative and summative assessments for determining student needs, monitoring student progress, measuring student growth, and evaluating student outcomes. This project of the test is a great project to understand the reasoning for testing within schools. It helps teachers assess their students work and understand if these students are understanding the material presented to them in class. It follows standard 7 very well as standard 7 entails assessments of students. This project provided below is all about understanding your students and how well they have scored. By completing data charts on the students we are able to tell the effectiveness of the instruction and helps teachers adjust the way they instruct.
My professional growth can be seen throughout this project because as In progress from the actual test taking to the explanation of answers until the final point where all the data comes together. This shows growth because I am able to understand the true meaning of assessments and being able to write up a test like this that makes sense goes a long way. It shows that as a teacher I can create a valuable test from the content presented and put it to use to understand the effectiveness of my students and how I am doing as a teacher. Completing this project has shown me a great deal of information needed to understand how I am doing as a teacher.
The performance indicators in this project would be 7J, 7H, and 7M. These indicators are in line with this project and show the importance of assessments. These indicators help understand the meaning of the project and how important testing is in schools. That it is more than just a grade.
Performance Indicators
"7H. communicates with and challenges students in a supportive manner and provides students with constructive feedback. "
"7M maintains useful and accurate records of student work and performance "
"7J uses assessment results to determine student performance levels, identify learning targets, select appropriate research-based instructional strategies, and implement instruction to enhance learning outcomes "
These indicators come directly from the Illinois professional Teaching Standards handbook.
These indicators are relevant to this project because we are testing the ability of our students as 7J explains. The focus of standard 7 is Assessments. Assessments are important for helping the teacher understand where their students are at. Standard 7 states, "The competent teacher understands and uses appropriate formative and summative assessments for determining student needs, monitoring student progress, measuring student growth, and evaluating student outcomes." Assessments help figure out a student's ability in the classroom. This assessment helps monitor students' progress throughout the semester. When the teacher uses this test to prepare students for the year. The teacher will have students take a post-test to see what material was covered and what students comprehended over the semester. This is more of a formative assessment given students aren't graded on correctness on the pre-test it is simply used as a gauge for the teacher to see what topics should be covered more in-depth.
Through this artifact, I was able to take away a lot of my understanding of assessments. Specifically, a pre-test helps the teacher to understand their students better. This will help me in my future classroom to understand my students. I have always wondered why pre-tests are a thing, and now that I am a teacher I can see the benefits a pre-test can have on both the students and the teacher. I learned how to distribute a successful pre-test. making sure the information being covered in the pre-test is meaningful. I now understand that you can't just throw random questions in and expect them to be beneficial the questions have to have meaning.
