Standard 2 - Content Area and Pedagogical Knowledge – The competent teacher has in-depth understanding of content area knowledge that includes central concepts, methods of inquiry, structures of the disciplines, and content area literacy. The teacher creates meaningful learning experiences for each student based upon interactions among content area and pedagogical knowledge, and evidence-based practice.
This lesson plan works with students through the business cycle. This is an important aspect when it comes to teaching Introduction to Business classes. The teacher introduces elements of the business cycle to the students and then allows students to work through specific characteristics of the business cycle. It helps students understand what it takes to go into running a business and the cycle that many businesses go through. Students are able to both learn from the teacher as well as self-learn by working together with a partner.
The standard states "The teacher creates meaningful learning experiences for each student based upon interactions among content area and pedagogical knowledge, and evidence-based practice." This connects to this lesson plan because the teacher in this plan is able to explain to students the elements of the business cycle. After explaining the students are working with partners to self-learn and understand the cycle by creating their own experience/explanation of the business cycle. They are able to interact with both the teacher and classmates which can benefit the learning experience by being introduced to the business cycle in a couple of different ways.
Throughout this lesson during student-teaching I was able to learn many things from this lesson. One is the content knowledge used within this lesson is important and the way you present it to students can make a big difference. I learned that by giving students and activity where they are able to understand the material from a different perspective helped them to learn the business cycle. It taught students that there are many different ways to learn the material through different perspectives.
This lesson plan is specifically geared toward a Business Law class. The subject covered within this lesson is Tort Law. Tort law deals with many different aspects including tort, tortfeasor, intentional tort, Assault/battery, false imprisonment, Defamation, invasion of privacy, and intentional infliction. In this lesson students are able to connect to the material both from a vocabulary standpoint and real world experience. Through the experience of watching a video about defamation they can connect to this from different perspectives.
The standard states,"The competent teacher has in-depth understanding of content area knowledge that includes central concepts." As a teacher being able to understand these concepts better than students the teacher is able to use there knowledge within this lesson plan to help students create connections that they couldn't using different forms of presentation. It is important that within this lesson the teacher (me) was able to use these different aspects to help my students create an understanding outside of the regular vocab to student methods.
Through this lesson I was able to learn many things. The first thing was that using different forms of presentation within the classroom can help students understand the material. Within a classroom that covers material such as business law, which can be dry sometimes, it can create a break-up of the material where students are able to connect at a different level. As the teacher in this lesson I was able to create an opportunity for student to connect business law real people like celebrities that almost everyone knows.
