Standard 3 - Planning for Differentiated Instruction – The competent teacher plans and designs instruction based on content area knowledge, diverse student characteristics, student performance data, curriculum goals, and the community context. The teacher plans for ongoing student growth and achievement.
This artifact is a test that I used in my student-teaching experience. Specifically within the Introduction to the business classroom. This test was taken among the class including my diverse student characteristics. This test covered the knowledge that we had talked about in Chapter 17.
As far as Standard 3 goes, "The competent teacher plans and designs instruction based on content area knowledge, diverse student characteristics, student performance data, curriculum goals, and the community context". This test was administered to everyone in the class including students who needed an accommodation for the test to be read. This test is specifically geared toward everyone in the class. Those with accommodations and those without. Using basic language to understand the material without having to use confusing words that can catch students off guard.
I learned a lot from distributing this test compared to the other one that we had used before. I learned that building a test that is easy to understand as far as the wording goes. The material covered can be tough and sometimes when the wording on the test is confusing it can distract and also inhibit the kids from learning the material. This will help me as I build toward my career and make sure that my students can understand the test and the wording of the test. Making sure that each student is accounted for..
This artifact is a lesson plan that was taught while I was student teaching. This is a lesson for an Introduction to Business class. Within this lesson is activities for students to become more familiar with economic activity. The students will be presented with multiple different perspectives of economic activity. The first activity involves students following along in their notes through a PPT led by the teacher. After the PPT students will watch a video as a class that helps them understand how important the economy is especially a good economy. In the third activity students will be working in groups to explain and describe the business cycle on a poster using pictures and their own words.
This artifact connects with Standard 3 because it offers differentiated instruction for students with IEPs or 504's. Differentiated instruction helps these students with certain learning disabilities get as much as they can out of the material presented. Standard 3 states, "The competent teacher plans and designs instruction based on content area knowledge, diverse student characteristics, student performance data, curriculum goals, and the community context". This is seen in the lesson when it talks about the struggling learners in the class getting extra time as well as working in groups they are comfortable with. This instruction helps every student in the classroom be successful. Students with IEPs or 504's can struggle when there is group work and it is important to design the instruction so it is effective for everyone.
When using this artifact I learned a lot about the design of instruction and making sure that each student is accounted for when planning. By making these activities so that everyone can understand whether that means putting them in certain groups or offering students extended time to finish the assignment to the best of their ability. This is important for my future classroom because it helped me to understand how to design lessons is very important for all students. Making sure everyone is included in the instruction and making sure these students aren't falling behind. Creating this artifact has helped me to understand the work that needs to go into designing lessons and instruction for my classroom. Making sure that I understand each student's needs and abilities to create the best learning environment.
