Standard 6 - Reading, Writing, and Oral Communication – The competent teacher has foundational knowledge of reading, writing, and oral communication within the content area and recognizes and addresses student reading, writing, and oral communication needs to facilitate the acquisition of content knowledge.
This artifact was used in the Business Law class during my student teaching. It deals with contracts. In this artifact, you can see a few different scenarios that deal with contracts. After reading the scenarios the students were asked to answer a couple of questions based on the scenario.
This artifact connects to the 6th Standard by giving students the opportunity to read scenarios. It offers students the chance to read and facilitate the content knowledge by using the scenarios in this artifact. It helps students to understand the concept of contracts within business law through reading and writing. By writing their answers to the questions students are able to use reading, writing, and oral communication. When students are writing their answers down they communicate with students that sit next to them the answers to the questions.
With this assignment, I was able to learn the effectiveness of reading, writing, and oral communication can do for students. In the business environment, it can sometimes be hard for teachers to come up with ideas that involve these three forms. Business can sometimes be hard to integrate reading and writing but with this assignment, they are able to use the three forms to complete their answers. Doing this assignment I understand how to use reading and writing as a tool for students within the business classroom.
This artifact is a lesson plan that deals with discussions. Discussions in class can be hard especially within the business classroom. During my student-teaching I was able to use this lesson that focuses specifically on discussing. This artifact allows students to discuss with other students business terms and create a learning environment that isn't just sitting and listening.
In the business classroom, it can sometimes be hard to integrate reading, writing, and oral communication with students. With this specific lesson, students will be in three different discussions among groups. Using the discussion method students will be able to learn from each other and take away different perspectives that other students may have. Instead of coming straight from the teacher, they are able to orally communicate with one another the material being covered in class. Standard 6 states, "The competent teacher has foundational knowledge of reading, writing, and oral communication within the content area and recognizes and addresses student reading, writing, and oral communication needs to facilitate the acquisition of content knowledge." By using this method in my classroom I was able to facilitate conversation among students by using prompts to jumpstart the conversation.
This lesson gave me the opportunity to grow and develop as a teacher. I never understood the importance of reading, writing, and oral communication in the classroom. Being able to experience a lesson that allowed me to teach and orally communicated lessons via discussion I was able to see the effect it had on the students. Giving them the opportunity to learn from different perspectives of material being covered in business.
