One of the benefits of working with Georgia Virtual school in an online platform is the flexibility and ability to meet students where they are. As a program, as courses are updated and developed moving forward there is a focus on creating individual paths with pre-assessments and lots of choice. Throughout my readings, this is one of the greatest indicators for motivation is to allow the learner to have choices in their learning.
Below are pictures of one small part of a course in which students showcase to other students the choices of what they have worked on to show mastery of standards. This not only gives other students ideas, but it provides an opportunity for students to have peers give feedback on their work.
Another important aspect of individual paths is the pace of the learning. While there certainly have to be defined boundaries and a student can't take an entire semester on one concept, I have seen that when working with students to allow for some flexibility in their pace to ensure they are understanding concepts before moving forward has been huge. I have had so much feedback recently from students and parents, appreciative of the opportunity to dictate their pace and how that has helped them be so much more successful then in previous classroom experiences when the teacher dictates the pace.
