Standard 8 -The competent teacher builds and maintains collaborative relationships to foster cognitive, linguistic, physical, and social and emotional development. This teacher works as a team member with professional colleagues, students, parents or guardians, and community members.
Family and Community Engagement
Description: This artifact shows the newsletter sent home with the students for a family engagement night. The families were able to come and parents were able to sit in a presentation for "creative parenting strategies." The students were able to participate in games that were teacher led. I attended this event and we had a good turnout. I was able to meet several of my student's families and it was a good time.
Connection: This artifact connects to Standard 8-8e which states the understanding of school- and work-based learning environments and the need for collaboration with all organizations to enhance student learning. This artifact connects to this standard because it shows how I participated in an even where different community organizations came out to engage with the staff, parents, and students. Parents were able to learn about all that the community offers to them.
What I learned: I learned how important it to show the parents and students that not only the school is here for them, but how the community (library, police and fire departments, and rec center) are too. I learned that having these type of events can bring staff, parents and the community together for the better good of students. I truly means alot to for studnets to see their families interacting with their teachers.
My Superpower
Description: This artifact shows an SEL activity done with the girls in our class. The social worker came and took all the girls out to work on these "super power" heroes. The girls in class have been struggling to get along, therefore they have been having group sessions with our school social worker. This activity had them chose a super power that makes them a good friend and they created super heroes.
Connection: This artifact connects to Standard 8-8j which states teachers work with all school personnel to develop learning climates for the school that encourage unity, support a sense of shared purpose, show trust in one another, and value individuals. This artifact shows how I have worked alongside our social worker in trying to help the girls get along. I reached out to the social worker and shared with her all that has been going on and we agreed its best to have social sessions with the girls to try and create a unity between them.
What I learned: I learned how important it is to reach out for help. The social worker was quick to address the issues talked about and starting coming in to do SEL lessons and also pulling out groups to work with.
