Phonics Practice
Description: This artifact is a center work phonics worksheet. The students get practice reading and identifying words with the vowel team being worked on. The studnets read together and by themselves. The students then answer questions to work on their comprehension.
Connection: This artifact connects to Standard 6-6i which states that teachers know appropriate and varied instructional approaches that help develop word knowledge, vocabulary, comprehension, and fluency. This artifact shows how important it is to choose worksheets that promote the best learning practices. This worksheet promotes fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. The worksheet asks them to read the passage three times for fluency and then work on comprehension by answering the questions. It even adds vocabulary growth by asking them for synonyms.
What I learned: I learned that it's important to think about the worksheets used in the classroom. A good teacher looks for quality worksheets and not busy worksheets that dose does not incorporate the instructional approaches used in the classroom.
Lexia Reading Program
Description: This artifact shows Lexia, a program that focuses on phonics instruction and independent basic reading skills. The program is used for students with reading struggles, so not every student has access to this program. Our class has morning work worksheets to do every morning, so to ensure that these certain students meet there time requirements on Lexia, they work on Lexia instead of morning work.
Connection: This artifact connects to Standard 6-6j which states that teachers know how to select and use online resources appropriate to the content areas and the reading needs and levels of each student. This artifact connects to this standard because it is a program used to support struggling readers. I have made sure that the students are getting on Lexia at least once a day for teh extra support and practice.
What I learned: I learned that it is challenging to fit in the programs that are required to be used during class time. It will take time to find what works for my class and I now know it's okay to make changes to the schedule as I go.
