Animal Report
Our second grade class worked very hard on their animal research and reports. This project crossed our informational writing unit and our science animal and habitats unit. The students were allowed to choose any animal that could be seen at a zoo. This is because we had a planned field trip to Brookfield Zoo coming up and they would be able to look for the animals they researched. The students spent the week prior to the trip researching their animals and taking their own notes, then we tried our best to see all the animals that were picked at the zoo. The students were making connections to their research and habitat knowledge the entire time at the zoo. It truly was an amazing trip to the zoo. After our zoo trip, the students put together an animal report flip book with basic information like animal features, habitat, interesting facts and questions they still had about their animal. After making the flip-books they made a final report about their animals. I was very proud of the effort put into these repots and they all gave it their all and they turned out wonderful. The photos to the left shows the note sheets they used. They used sticky notes to help keep their facts organized by appearance, habitat, and diet. The web was used for interesting facts on one question they still wondered about the animal. Also pictured our the finished projects.
Area Project
This was a smaller project that I did with my third grade class during my pre-student teaching course. We were working on our area unit and the students found the area of their names. The students were given graph paper and had the freedom of creating their name on the paper how ever they liked, and then found the area that their name covered. They students had so much fun with this activity, some even choose to do a second one.
