To participate actively in a professional community is to engage in spaces where there are professionals that can enhance your thinking about research. This can be either through communities of similar disciplines or completely different disciplines.
Given the interdisciplinary nature of engineering, I perfer to engage in communities that will allow me to think about things from different angles. As an undergraduate, I was actively looking to collaborate or participate with organizations from other disciplines.
To connect with teachers that work first hand with students through the University of Puerto Rico's Teacher Preparation Program or engage with engineers through engineering ambassadors has allowed me to see educational problems at different angles.
Participating is not simply attending a talk... Participating involves networking, volunteering, and presenting at conferences, communities, and other settings.
