Merle is a marking that covers the body with patches. It's seen in real dogs

At minimum it can display 1 or 2 colors. Patches will be always darker than the base or what sits under, or desaturated greyed out darker color.
If gradient is present, you can use up to 3 colors for the patches.
This marking can cover any part of the body but a minimum of 30% of the basecoat should be left visible.

When dominant, you can display 3 colors for the patches, one of them can even be lighter!, if gradient is present, you can display 4 colours total.
