Previously, we thought about the incredible privilege God has given parents: you are your child’s primary discipler.
But perhaps your immediate thought was:
“Okay… so when exactly am I supposed to do all this discipling?”
Family Bible time. Prayer. Church. Conversations about Jesus.
You might already feel like your week is full to bursting.
Here's the good news:
Discipleship doesn't have to be another thing you add to your family's schedule.
In fact, much of it is already happening.
Look for the moments
Deuteronomy 6:6–7 says:
“Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.”
God's vision for family discipleship is wonderfully ordinary.
When you're sitting.
When you're walking.
When you're going to bed.
When you're getting up.
In other words: life.
The school run. The dinner table. The supermarket. The car journey. Walking the dog. Waiting for football training. Sitting on the edge of their bed.
These ordinary moments are opportunities to help your child see their ordinary life through the lens of an extraordinary God.
So what might that look like?
Your child says, “I'm really nervous about tomorrow.”
That's a discipleship opportunity.
You might say:
“I understand. What are you worried about? Shall we pray about it together?”
Your child tells you someone was horrible to them.
That's a discipleship opportunity.
“I'm sorry. How did that make you feel? What do you think Jesus would want you to do?”
Your child gets brilliant exam results.
That's a discipleship opportunity too.
“That's fantastic! Let's thank God for helping you.”
And when you get frustrated in the car, or lose your temper, or get something wrong?
That's a discipleship opportunity.
“I'm sorry. I shouldn't have spoken to you like that. Will you forgive me?”
Suddenly, discipleship isn't just something that happens when everyone is sitting quietly with an open Bible.
It's happening all the time.
Start looking differently
You don't need to manufacture spiritual conversations every five minutes. 😂
Please don't turn every conversation into a sermon.
Instead, start asking:
“Where is God already at work in this moment?”
When your child is afraid, you can point them to God's presence.
When they're celebrating, you can point them to God's goodness.
When they've sinned, you can point them to God's grace and forgiveness.
When they ask a difficult question, you can open God's Word together.
When life is hard, you can help them learn to trust God.
The goal isn't to make every conversation about God.
It's to help your child learn that God is relevant to every part of life.
And that's exactly what Deuteronomy 6 is showing us.
So as school starts this week, don't worry about finding extra time for discipleship.
Look at the time you already have differently.
The five-minute school run might become a prayer.
The conversation at dinner might become an opportunity to talk about wisdom.
The bedtime question might open up a conversation about God.
You don't need more hours in the day.
You just need eyes to see the opportunities God has already given you.
🧠 ONE THING TO REMEMBER
Discipleship isn't just another thing you do. It's learning to use the ordinary moments you already have to point your child towards Jesus.
THIS WEEK AT HOME
📖 READ: Deuteronomy 6:6–9
💬 ASK: “What happened today that we could talk to God about?”
🙏 PRAY: “Lord, help us to see the opportunities you give us to talk about you.”
👣 TRY: Choose one ordinary moment this week—perhaps the school run or dinner—and deliberately use it to talk about Jesus.
