We know the Bible teaches us two big truths:
You are your child's primary discipler.
And discipleship happens in ordinary moments.
But there is still something wonderfully powerful about simply sitting down together, opening the Bible and listening to what God says.
For some families, that's already normal.
For others, the thought of “family Bible time” immediately feels a little daunting.
So let's make it simple.
You don't need to make it complicated
Family Bible time doesn't need to be an hour-long study with matching notebooks, perfect silence and everyone enthusiastically taking notes.
You don't need to know all the answers.
You don't need to be a brilliant Bible teacher.
You just need a Bible and a willingness to open it together.
The Bible itself is God's Word, and God's Word is powerful.
So start small.
Five minutes is better than no minutes.
Read a short passage. Talk about it. Pray together.
That's it.
Try this simple pattern
📖 READ
Choose a short passage and read it together.
You could work through one of the Gospels, read a Psalm, or simply start with a story about Jesus.
Don't worry about covering loads.
A few verses understood well are better than a whole chapter rushed through.
💬 ASK
Ask a couple of simple questions:
What does this tell us about God?
What does this tell us about us?
What should we do with what we've read?
And don't panic if your child's answer is “I don't know.” 😂
You're teaching them that God's Word is worth thinking about.
👣 APPLY
Help them connect the Bible to real life.
If you've read about Jesus forgiving someone, ask:
“Is there anyone we need to forgive?”
If you've read about trusting God, ask:
“Is there anything we're worried about that we could trust God with?”
If you've read about God's generosity, ask:
“How could we be generous this week?”
The goal isn't simply to know more Bible.
It's to let God's Word shape the way we live.
🙏 PRAY
Finish by talking to God about what you've just read.
Keep it simple.
Thank God for who He is.
Ask Him to help you obey what you've learned.
Bring the things you've talked about to Him.
And let your children hear you pray.
Don't wait for perfect
Perhaps you've tried family Bible time before and it didn't last.
Perhaps your children aren't particularly enthusiastic.
Perhaps you're thinking, “Our evenings are already chaos!”
That's okay.
Don't wait until your family is less busy.
Don't wait until your children are older.
Don't wait until you know more.
Just start.
And if it doesn't work one night?
Try again another night.
If everyone argues?
Welcome to family life.
If you miss a week?
Start again.
This isn't about building the perfect family routine.
It's about regularly putting God's Word in front of your family and trusting God to use it.
And remember what we're ultimately doing.
We're not trying to manufacture Christian children through better family devotions.
We're introducing our children to the God who has revealed Himself in His Word.
We're helping them hear His voice.
We're showing them that the Bible isn't just a book we take to church on Sundays.
It is God's Word for our everyday lives.
So tonight, or tomorrow, or sometime this week…
Open the Bible.
Read a little.
Ask some questions.
Pray together.
And start small.
🧠 ONE THING TO REMEMBER
You don't need to lead the perfect family Bible time. Just open God's Word, listen to what He says and help your family respond to Him.
THIS WEEK AT HOME
📖 READ: Mark 4:35–41
💬 ASK: “What does this story show us about who Jesus is?”
🙏 PRAY: “Jesus, help us to trust you when we're afraid.”
👣 TRY: Spend 5 minutes together reading the passage. Don't aim for perfection. Just open the Bible and start.
