The following is taken from a document produced by Vi (Flatau) Johnson: Vi asked her mom, Elsie Flatau, many questions in January of 1988 when she was visiting Port Angeles. The account was compiled by Vi in March 1988. Minnie (Beckman) Heilman read it over in February 1988 to add a note or two.
Clara Anna Beckman
Clara went to Linton, North Dakota to live with her sister Louise.
Clara worked in a department store. She went with Albert Tuff. He went into the service. Through a mix-up and not his fault, he was unjustly accused of not bringing cigarettes and candy to his buddies (of which friends had sent along with him to give to them). This ended it for Clara.
She met Alex Walther, who worked in a garage in Linton, North Dakota. They were married on June 28, 1920, when Alex was 21 and Clara 24.
Clara worked in canneries in North Dakota and later at Lodi, California where they moved in 1935.
They had three children.
Clara Walther’s obituary in the newspaper: Clara A. Walther (Beckman), 86, a Lodi resident since 1935, died Monday in a local hospital following a brief illness.
She was a native of Perham Minnesota where she grew up and attended local schools. She graduated from the local high school and then moved to Linton, North Dakota where she worked as a sales clerk in a general merchandise store. She married Alex Walther in June of 1920 in Linton and the family lived there until 1935 when they came to Lodi.
Mrs. Walther worked in local canneries and fruit packing sheds and also operated a custom drapery shop in her home which she continued until 1980. Mr. Walther died in 1975 and their son Alan A. “Bud” Walter of Lodi died in May of 1980. She was a member of the Royal Neighbors of America and had been the past Oracle of that club.
Mrs. Walther is survived by two daughters. Lucille Waddell, Wanda Walther both of Lodi; a brother Emil Beckman of Minnesota; two sisters Minnie Heilman of Oregon and Elsie Flatau of Minnesota. Seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
It is noted that the obituary showed Clara's birth year is 1896 and in other documents, it is listed as 1895.
