The competent teacher has foundational knowledge of reading, writing, and oral communication within the content area and recognizes and addresses student reading, writing, and oral communication needs to facilitate the acquisition of content knowledge.  

Description: This artifact is an example of how writing and oral communication was used in my student teaching Honors Art class. This is an idea board that students submitted for proposal prior to beginning their impasto painting assignments.

Connection: This artifact aligns with the sixth Illinois Professional Teaching Standard and the knowledge indicator 6D) "Understands writing processes and their importance to content learning:" In this artifact, the students were prompted to write and draw elements of their proposal. This was the first step in the planning process.

Importance: The importance of writing in art education is to help artists fully think through their ideas. Writing and drawing work together in conveying the ideas and concepts and artist intends to expand on.
