Connection: This artifacts aligns with the third Illinois Professional Teaching Standard and knowledge indicator 3C) " understands cultural, linguistic, cognitive, physical, and social and emotional differences, and considers the needs of each student when planning instruction;" These guided notes were given to all students to help bridge any difference in comprehension of the information.
Importance: The importance for guided notes for all students is to help bridge any barriers that impede students from accessing the information. In this class, I had many ELL students who benefitted from the visual and physical engagement through the guided notes. During this lesson, I noticed high engagement with the guided notes, along with excelling performance amongst students on the assessment.
Description: This artifact is an example of accommodations I created for students with IEPs and 504s during my novice teaching placement at Amos Alonzo Stagg High School.
Connection: These adaptations align with the third Illinois Professional Teaching Standard and knowledge indicator 3A) "understands the Illinois Learning Standards (23 III. Adm. Code 1. Appendix D), curriculum development process, content, learning theory, assessment, and student development and knows how to incorporate this knowledge in planning differentiated instruction;" Art education integrates across all ability and intellectual levels. During my novice teaching, I taught 10 lessons in a high school ceramics classroom. I had students with severe intellectual disabilities from self contained special education classrooms integrate into this class. These adaptations made the content more accessible for these students.
Importance: Differentiated instruction is crucial within Art Education. Within an Art classroom, students walk in with varying ability levels. It is essential that all students are met with differentiated instruction that allows them to achieve their highest potential.
