Timed Pair Share is a partnered activity where each student takes turns to speak and listen for a prescribed amount of time.
Teacher announces a topic, states how long each student will share, and provides think time.
Student pairs greet each other with a high-five.
In pairs, Partner A shares; Partner B listens. (30 seconds each, for example)
Partner B responds with a positive remark.
Partners switch roles.
"The information you shared was fresh."
"It was awesome to listen to you because. . . "
"My life has been enriched by the knowledge you have imparted to me, oh wise one."
If the Timed-Pair-Share structure is already in place in your classroom, maybe consider adding-
A. Stroll-Pair-Share:
1. Students find a partner or a partner is assigned.
2. Teacher provides a topic.
3. Students stroll about the room in pairs, sharing or discussing the topic using Timed Pair Share.
B. Mix-Pair-Share too.
Students mix silently.
Teacher calls students to pair up.
Students make eye contact with a person close to them and greet that person with a high five. (If students can't find a partner, they put their hand up to find another person with their hand up.)
Now you can go into Timed-Pair-Share!
C. Progressive Timed Pair Share
Partners take turns sharing on the same discussion topic for progressively shorter (or longer) time periods. For example, the pair starts with 2 minutes each, then get 1 minute each for the final round. The number of rounds and time period depends on students and the discussion time.

LKS2 or KS1 Example of Mixed Pair Share
Why replace Think Pair Share: Works better than Think Pair Share as both partners get equal time.
Finish Early: If a student finishes early or is stuck, it is his or her partner's responsibility to ask related questions.
Think Time: Give students at least 5 to 10 seconds of Think Time.
Listen up: Ask them to use 'Repeat after me gambit' rather than the 'Copy cat gambit' so they have to paraphrase to respond to their partner. Occasionally, call on a student to repeat what their partner said.
Time It: Use a visible timer- look under Kagan folder: Timer tools. Students manage their time better when they see the timer elapsing.
Mix Up Partners: Have students talk with their shoulder partners at times and their face partners at other times.
