Write your course handicap in the handicap spot on the card (2nd to last column). A handicap of N means that you would deduct N number of strokes from your gross score to get a net score. When you are figuring your net score for each hole, simply take your gross score and subtract the number of strokes you are allowed on that hole.
To stroke your card, begin by looking at a printed Juniper Hill scorecard. The handicap line for the forward tees is directly below the red yardage line on the card. Note that the holes are ranked for handicap purposes according to the “degree of difficulty”. The most difficult hole is ranked #1, the easiest is ranked #18. These numbers have no relation to the actual hole number.
A person with an 18 handicap would get 1 stroke per hole. A person with a 36 handicap would get 2 strokes per hole. A person with a handicap between 19 and 35 would get 1 stroke on some holes (the easier ones) and 2 on others (the harder ones).
Stroking your card is something you can do before you go out to play. A small dot(s) (corresponding to the number of strokes to be deducted) placed in the corner of each appropriate hole on the card is an easy reminder.
Start with the #1 ranked hole and give yourself one stroke for each hole. At the end of the eighteen holes you still have 5 strokes remaining. (18 + 5 = 23) So start over again at the #1 ranked hole and give yourself another stroke on each hole (decreasing in difficulty) until you use up your 5 remaining strokes.
