This piece depicts an earthquake. A low, rumbling ostinato starts the piece, and this motive carries throughout much of it. The piece becomes lighter around a minute in, signifying hope in the aftermath of the earthquake, but the earthquake begins to pick up again, and the piece ends with repeated cluster chords, representing the earthquake’s destruction.
