How Say Ye to My Soul? is a reflection on Psalm eleven, a prayer about finding courage through God. The piece begins with a section using triplet figures to reflect the mounting weaponry of the unrighteous. Towards the middle of the piece, glissandi represent fire and brimstone falling on those who oppose virtue. Throughout the work, I use quartal chords with tritones to show the wicked attacking, while seventh and ninth chords show God’s sustenance. Concluding the piece, seven extended chords appear, alluding to the victory passage at the end of Stravinsky’s Firebird and indicating God’s ultimate triumph.
