When I started writing this piece, I began with a rhythmic motive, which evoked images of a car chase. Using quirky harmonies, I developed this idea. The piece begins with a car driving along the open road. As it picks up speed, it heads into a crash; after a little time at the mechanic’s shop, the car continues along to a race, and it easily finishes in first, mocking all the drivers left in its dust.
